Two years ago Far Rockaway was written up as the next Hamptons. Accessible by subway ( a long ride on the A )and the LIRR, it was the beach to invest in. Last summer the surf scene quickly over populated this one time ghetto beach, aka Rockapulco. The New York Times wrote a profile Sunday on the neighborhood. Between the over building and the escalating mortgage payments , the economy of the neighborhood has been threatened. Read the article here. |

The Queens Museum of Art's latest exhibit Back on the Map: Revisiting the New York State Pavilion at the 1964/65 World's Fair is having it's opening reception Opening Reception: Sunday, January 27, 2008, 3:00 – 6:00 pm. "Commissioned by Governor Nelson Rockefeller, the New York State Pavilion featured a complex of structures: a Theaterama building, three observation towers, and the “Tent of Tomorrow,” a 12-story, open-air elliptical pavilion capped by the World’s largest suspended cable system roof fitted with colored acrylic panels. For the floor of the “Tent of Tomorrow,” Johnson commissioned the largest-known representation of any area of the earth’s surface: a 130-foot-by-166-foot terrazzo replica of a Texaco New York State road map. A fusion of Pop Art imagery and traditional craft techniques, the Texaco Road Map was a crucial component of Johnson’s Pavilion and is considered – alongside graphic paintings by Roy Lichtenstein on the Theaterama's exterior–one of the first public Pop Art monuments." Visitors will get a chance to see the restoration close up. * Fun fact : All music played will be from bands that have played at the Pavilion. Queens Museum of Art is in Flushing. |

Troma Films are known for their shocking imagery. James Gunn and Peter Jackson, credit Troma with inventing the "slapstick gore" cinema. Movies like the Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'Em High, and most recently Poultrygeist, contain wry political satire mixed with grande guignolesexuality, graphic violence, and a bizarre sense of humor. Troma's slogan is "Movies of the Future". Troma is also known for re-cycling the same props, actors, and scenes over and over again, sometimes to save money, mostly for comic effect. This has become a hallmark of Troma's filmmaking style. Examples include a severed leg, a Penis Monster, and the flipping/exploding of the same car filmed for the movie Sgt. Kabukiman, NYPD that has been used for every major Troma release since that film. Many now-famous celebrities got their start with films released by Troma including Kevin Costner (Sizzle Beach, U.S.A.), Samuel L. Jackson (Def by Temptation), Marisa Tomei (The Toxic Avenger), Vincent D'Onofrio (The First Turn-On), James Gunn (Tromeo and Juliet), and Trey Parker and Matt Stone (Cannibal! The Musical) ..and now the weirdness comes to Queens! Troma Studios is going to move to LIC at the end of the month! They are looking for volunteers to help them move on January 21st and January 22nd. For more info email gray@troma.com. DB |

The large sign will guide you. Step 4. Unfortunately, no recyclable characters walking around just very friendly park employees, free hot chocolate and pins. Yup, pins. Step 5. Looking how to gage whether or not your neighborhood is worth moving too? Walk Score, is a website that shows you "a map of what's nearby and calculates a Walk Score for any property." It lists everything from grocery stores, health centers, bars and schools. The distance is also added between locations to give you an idea of how far to walk. My newest home has a score of 97 (out of 100) which means "Walkers' Paradise: Most errands can be accomplished on foot and many people get by without owning a car." The town I went to highschool in got a zero (0 out of 100). Shudder. I don't lie when I tell you there were a few horse and buggys around town. Check out the website here...

Always Take McGuinness While sitting in traffic on the BQE last Tuesday evening with angry fists raised toward the gods, I became inspired to share a little tip with all my fellow Queens drivers. review The New York Times praises the ethnic diversity of Queens in the Travel Section. It's a good article, not really covering new ground. Ironically, they review the Thai restaurant below. Read it here... Thai, Uncensored : Sripraphai Thai Restaurant Sure it's fun to dine on Pad Thai while gazing at a 50 foot statue of the Buddha and all, but did you ever wonder what the stuff really tastes like in Thailand? Like, what they really eat? You bet your sweet basil you do! Before you can fully appreciate Halibut Cha Cha La Vong, wouldn't it make sense to start from the beginning? Let's do that, shall we... review Art House Flicks in Forest Hills If you are tired of schlepping over to the Angelika anytime you want to see the latest Ang Lee film and you are of the belief that you can enjoy a smart independent movie without having to sip on ten-dollar cappuccinos, then your prayers have been answered. Nine years ago I made the big move from 34th Street and 30th Avenue in Astoria to 29th Street...also off 30th Avenue. Yes, an entire 5 blocks away and a whole new world. Back then the corner of 30th Ave and 30th Street was home to the beloved Rainbow Diner. Personally, I preferred to call it the Rainblow. You all remember, right?... review Calling All Designers...Or Just Someone Looking for Cloth I incomprehensibly made a vow to help decorate a friend's baby shower recently led me in search of a few yards of fabric. Naturally, I was looking for pretty fabric at a decent price and happened upon a store on Broadway in Long Island City.
